VINYASA

The asana taught on this Teacher Training course is physically challenging, creative, alignment-orientated and fun.. In the classroom, Carol likes to play with a series of vinyasa threads (sequences of postures, link with the breath) that she has developed over the years. Carol also teaches technique classes where poses are broken down bio-mechanically and synergistically to bring the yoga anatomy off the page. She always allows for mixed level in her group by offering various expressions of the poses and encouraging students to work to their own level.  Myofascial release workshops will also be taught to hydrate and release adhesions in this tensional connective tissue network. This work is also taught to release deep held tension in the body and can also  improve mobility

TEACHING SKILL

There are daily Teaching Methodology classes, so that you will feel prepared for the classroom and feel fully equipped to deliver the work after you graduate. You will be taught a specific methodology with sequencing options and alignment principles that create structures to intelligently inform your classes, which also allow enough flexibility for you to develop your own individual teaching voice as an expression of your authentic self and your relationship with the practice.

ANATOMY

The yoga anatomy taught on the 200 hr trainings is cutting edge. It incorporates principle of biomechanics, synergy and myofascial meridians. These classes allows you to dive into a deeper relationship with your body on and off the mat. They also equip you to understanding other people’s bodies in relation to postural holdings and common troubleshooting areas in relation to asana.

PRANIC HEALING ENERGY WORK AND MEDITATIONS

  • The 5 sheaths meditation.
  • Witness based meditations
  • Kundalini chakra meditations
  • Heart based meditations
  • Dynamic meditations
  • Kundalini Trance Dance
  • A collection of traditional pranayamas to cleanse the panic body.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy on our trainings is delivered in a non-dogmatic way and invites group discussion where all beliefs and opinions are respected. We use class discussions, circles, artwork, chanting, empathetic listening and meditation processes to explore the spiritual systems of Patanjali’s sutras, Vedanta, Advaita Vedanta, Samkhya and Tantra. We believe that these spiritual systems all offer a different perspective of the same truth and we hope that in our explorations, students can find in these belief systems, tools to strengthen the mind, emotions and spirit, a spiritual rock to lean on in times of need, deeper insight to our true nature and a deeper sense of worth that lies inherent in our being. It is a true blessing to be able to explore this work within a group and many students have told us that that this part of the training has been life changing for them.

Yoga Teacher Training Ireland

Hello! My name is Carol Murphy. I love exploring yoga asana, anatomy and philosophy; I also love (raw/) vegan cooking and meditation!

I started Green Lotus Yoga teacher training school in 2007. Since then I have graduated over 300 teachers from my training throughout Ireland and abroad. Most of my work is in Ireland but I have also taught yoga in London, California, India, South Africa, Morocco and Spain.

I like to teach Vinyasa style yoga as mindful, strengthening, slow, deep, breath-centered movement, creating various forms and threads to keep things alive. I am practising yoga 27 years and teaching 20. My background is in Iyengar, Ashtanga and Vinyasa, I am also a qualified Neuro-muscular therapist, which is a form of physical therapy that works with fascial meridians  and acknowledges the interconnected nature of the body, just like yoga does…

In addition to the above, I have an Arts degree and a masters in Philosophy and Theatre. I have also studied Ayurveda and yoga therapy in India. I am a raw vegan educator (although not 100% vegan or raw), a qualified sports massage therapist, a trained Art of Being Tantra instructor, a qualified Trance Dance teacher and I practice and study the Reiki Tummo Method, which combines open heart meditations with reiki and kundalini healing work.

These gifts created solidity and ground from which I can rise and fly, roots and wings, creating safety, balance, expansion and joy in my life and for this I am grateful.

Suryalila Retreat Centre is an incredibly beautiful yoga centre close to Seville in Southern Spain.

It has 4 yoga spaces, one of which is a large Geodesic dome with an underfloor cooling system (please see from the pictures above). Most of the TTC will be in this dome.

The accommodation is that little bit more plush that the usual retreat standards, with washing machines, kitchens, lounge areas and aircon in the student houses. There is also outdoor yurt and glamping options. The food is to die for. The staff are so supportive and helpful. There is a great yoga shop there, where you can anything from raw chocolate and great Omnitom yoga clothing to tampons ! There is also horse riding, an outdoor pool area, great walks and their latest addition is a sweat lodge ! Students usually love Suryalila. On my last TTC intensive retreat there, 2 students commented that it was “one of the best weeks of their lives”.

Gourmet Vegetarian Cuisine

kitchen-teaser-923x615

At Suryalila Retreat Centre, they have an outstanding vegetarian fare. Meals are delicious, diverse, and beautifully presented, using all organic and mostly local ingredients. They are working towards suppling more and more of produce needs from our own organic farm and garden!

Vegetarian Kitchen

The kitchen is a happy and bustling environment and the cooks are all very creative and talented.  The Suryalila Kitchen specializes in gourmet international vegetarian cuisine, using the freshest seasonal, locally-sourced organic fruits and vegetables available, artfully prepared in a varied and truly eclectic international menu. Eggs are gathered daily from our own happy chickens and when the season allows you will enjoy the freshest of fruit picked from our own orchard of apricot, peach, fig and pear trees!

They regularly accommodate vegan, gluten-free, and non-dairy diets, so if you have any special dietary restrictions, just let us know!

The gourmet vegetarian cuisine will be one of the greatest food experiences of your life and we promise you, you will be raving about the food long after you return home!

The closest airport is Seville but it is also possible to fly into Malaga and get a bus or train to the retreat.  Pickups can be arranged from Villamartin which is only a short ride to the centre.

We also organise group transfers from both airports at reasonable rates for a car holding up to 4 people.  The cost of the transfer is shared between passengers.

Malaga is 2hrs from the centre the transfer cost is 150 euros one way.

Seville is 1hr from the retreat and transfers are 90 euros one way.

When considering doing a teacher training, its a good idea to hear what other people have to say about it. Here are some testimonials  from former students.

“Carol’s years of dedication to yoga have provided an extraordinary depth of knowledge and experience of all its aspects. She combines a refreshing strictness and rigour in her methodology and teaching practise with a sensitivity to spirit that provides an intellectually, physically and emotionally challenging and life enriching experience. I thoroughly recommend her and the training course she has created.”

Johnny Paterson – London

“I honestly don’t think I could have chosen a better teacher training. Carol’s depth of experience and knowledge across Iyengar, Ashtanga, anatomy and philosophy allows her to give her trainees the strongest of foundations from which to both practice and teach yoga. Her love, passion and respect for the teachings infused every class, and the course content consistently spoke to the heart of the yoga journey and all it can offer. As a result the training transformed my personal practice and I would recommend it to anyone with a thirst to learn more about yoga, to deepen their practice and to work hard! You’ll leave completely inspired and hungry for more.”

“It was an amazing experience! I was looking for a yoga training which covers in-depth knowledge about the movement of the yoga postures. I’m glad I found the right one! I loved the yoga anatomy of this program. It was like an eye opener! Now I realise how I was practising so many yoga poses in a wrong way and that is why there was so much pain. No one ever told me about it in the yoga studios I have been going to back home in Delhli. The course content is super from all aspects. The Ayurveda and Philosophy sessions were meaningful and beautiful! It all comes from Carol’s life experience and study from so many years. She is a great teacher with great knowledge! I sincerely thanks Carol for putting this all together in this training. Now I have much more knowledge about the yoga postures and can teach safely. I highly recommend this TTC for not only learning how to teach but also for enhancing one’s self-practice and awareness about life in general. Will definitely do the 300 hr TTC after two years !! “

“Carol delivered everything promised of her 200 hour Vinyasa training, and more! She was supportive, encouraging, kind, intelligent and talented in her work as a teacher — I didn’t have the strongest asana practice when I arrived but the right motivational words from Carol saw me through to the end and I am now a qualified teacher! 🙂 Carol’s intelligence and sensitivity towards the individual needs of her students is, I believe, what makes her so special. She is highly educated, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about what she does. I learned so much in one month and really feel as though the positive lifestyle changes I made over in India will stay with me now that I’m back in the UK — she has inspired me! Cannot recommend the course enough.”

The YTT was an experience I will never forget. The course content was very diverse and well balanced. Alignment is key in Carols work, and I am grateful to have built a solid foundation for my teaching journey ahead. Carol is an extremely knowledgable and inspiring teacher and I really enjoyed studying yoga anatomy, philosophy, Ayurveda and all the other subjects with her. I feel the course has given me a good understanding of teaching yoga, as well as the practical skills and confidence needed to teach a class. Thanks again for the wonderful experience

“Carol’s yoga teacher training intensive is just that; intensive. It is also a life changing. Carol has a wealth of knowledge and a deep love for the many and varied facets of yoga. Having spent years obtaining this knowledge, it is clear she has a desire to share it. This makes for fascinating insights into the world of yoga both on a practical level -with detailed anatomy lectures and on a spiritual/emotional level.

She offers support but more importantly gives her students the tools to manage for themselves. Her training offers a safe exploration into the world of meditation and spirituality, where people are held and supported appropriately.

Carol’s morning classes were dynamic, fun and at times challenging. The flow from movement to movement powered by the breath makes for a beautiful practice. The technical classes were also excellent with clear breakdown of asanas and good instruction, including some helpful tips to master that new pose.

I have come away feeling confident in my ability to teach. Feeling rich with the knowledge I have been given and having made some special bonds. My own practice has improved and I have a clear understanding of the areas I need to work on and how and why. Thank you….. “

“It has been a privilege to train with a teacher of Carol’s caliber. Her dedication, passion and knowledge is incredible. Her ability to ‘get’ where each of her students are in their bodies and how and when they are ready to be pushed to the next stage, to open or strengthen the body more and develop towards the next expression of the pose is more than reassuring, it is impressive. Her creative ability to spontaneously ‘workshop’ a pose that she ferls the class is having difficulty with is inspirational and effective. In her led practice you may suddenly find yourself in a pose that only moments before was unavailable to you! Her ability to relate modern anatomy to the poses really helps students to deepen the expression of a pose safely and effectively both in their own practice and also provides them with the relevant points, via her training manual, to pass on to their own students. Her training aims to equip students with more than just the basics. She passes on her knowledge of the energetics involved in each asana in order that student teachers can then emulate her teaching style, by using the framework she provides, to co-create balanced classes with their own students. Of course, this is equally helpful in developing one’s own home practice. Carol introduces other aspects of yoga and spirituality too – many an interesting and eye -opening discussion has been had in class! I would highly recommend training with Carol, especially if you like training hard! “

“Be prepared for a life changing experience. My training was a very personal journey which has given me the tools to deal with anything life throws at me and the ability to move chaos into order. It has thought me to observe rather than react in my Asana practice, and to be patient with my body. This course has been a journey of self reflection and discipline where I learned to tackle the body and mind bringing me to a place of stillness. The training had well thought out techniques and alignment principles which has me very confident that I could teach yoga safely. The course is very well structured. The early week intensive training in Spain built immense trust and fantastic relationships within our group which continued and grew throughout the 9 months on our weekend trainings. There was never a sense of competition and the only ego to deal with was your own.Carol is an amazing and well experienced teacher. Her passion, her knowledge, her belief and love for all aspects of yoga is inspiring! She always radiates positive energy, yet is assertive when she needs to be. I appreciate the pressure that was put on me to learn alignment principles in order to modify some of my previous ways of practising to bring me to a safer more aware practice.

The 10 day detox was great – it thought me about foods/superfoods which were essential in keeping my dosha in balance thereby grounding and calming me from the inside out. My diet is a lot healthier and more interesting as a result of this course and the nutribullet is now one of my favourite companions.

Finally this course is hard work and a big commitment but so enjoyable & interesting with such rewarding returns. Carol is talented, intelligent, grounded, humble and has great wisdom & experiences which she generously imparts. Thank you for sharing some of your expertise with me. Namaste 😉

“The thought struck me today to get in touch- just really to express in words a little gratitude (which I do in my mind and sharing with people but thought maybe never directly to you since the course days!) .. Gratitude for the training and the yoga years in Devon Lodge. I feel I may have underestimated what I believe the true value of your work and what I learned from it was to go back to the core principles and teachings. And during the course, from a physio point of view too, I always really loved, trusted and respected the work and way you brought and presented the teachings.”

“Thanks again for a wonderful month of growth, inspiration and transformation, and all the love and energy that you give to your teaching!”

“I’ve been thinking to write you an email for ages. Mostly just to tell you how grateful I am that I took your teacher training 2 years ago in Spain. I’ve been teaching ever since. This year I spent almost 2 months in Rishikesh, India where I took my 300hr training. There I realized how strong yoga foundation you have given me comparing to other students. I must say I loved my time spent in India, I learned a lot about myself as a person and I definitely grew as a person but yoga wise – I don’t think I learned as much as I did from your 200hr training. Maybe those were cultural differences and perception of yoga in general. I don’t want to compare anything really, because all knowledge is good but when I’m teaching my classes – I still come back to your teachings 🙂 Thank you!”

Before embarking on a yoga TTC, we recommend that :

  • Students have at least 2 years experience on the yoga mat with a qualified   teacher.
  • A willingness to learn and a level of humility that allows space for growth; its hard for teachers to fill a cup that is already full.
  • Students should be fill out all areas of the application form and tell us in advance of any physical, mental or emotional issues.
  • Students should be aware that in addition to being incredible experiences, teachers trainings involve stress. Even though some of Green Lotus TTCs are held in exotic locations, they are not holidays. Before taking on a TTC, students should feel ready and prepared both physically and emotionally and be able to be responsible for  any possible emotional stress that may surface on a TTC, as part of their process. If a student is coming off mediation for Bi-Polar, has PTSD, is experiencing high anxiety, depression or any other issue that may effect their training, this should be discussed with the teacher during the application process. We just want to make sure you know what is involved and that you are ready.

When you have read over all of the details of the training, FAQs etc. and if you have the pre-requistive experience, the next step is to fill out the application form, supplied in the next section. If there are any other questions that are not addressed in the FAQ section, or if you are unsure about your level and wish to speak to administration or one of the trainers, please email us directly at carol@greenlotusyoga.com.

When your application is processed and you are accepted onto the training, we will email you a registration form with details of how to transfer your deposit.

When your deposit comes through, we will email you again to confirm receipt.

At any time after this point, after your flights are booked, you can fill out the online Student Application form. We recommend that you book your flights and fill out your form as soon as possible, so we can arrange group transfers for you.

We will also notify you 10 days before the date specified on your registration form to pay the remainder of fees. When we receive your fees, we will email you confirmation.

Shortly before the retreat, we will email you to give you final details about pick up information.

Please clink on the link to fill in the  Travel information form

It is the legal right of retreat centres to retain deposits after they have been paid. • In the case of deferring a TTC to another course within 3 years, a Green Lotus deferral fee of 200 euros may also be charged.
  • If a student decides to leave the TTC, has paid full fees and does not want to defer, Green Lotus Yoga will consider, but not guarantee refunding fees for hours not taken. If Green Lotus Yoga does decide to reimburse the student for hours not taken, the 800 euros deposit will be retained by Green Lotus Yoga, plus any additional fees that are non-refundable for the retreat centre (retreat fees may change with different courses).

TTC GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE

We would like our students to know that if a student has a complaint on the TTC, we want to hear about it. ! We grow from feedback and we wish to support you, your journey and your training is any way we can. We believe that the guidelines for making complaints are outlined below will create a sense of safety in the group for both teachers and students, and help you complete the TTC successfully.

How to make a complaint

1) Speak to Carol Murphy or other trainer if appropriate and try to resolve the complaint informally on the day. Your trainer will then suggest that you either discuss the complaint at the nearest break, after class or possibly call a group circle about it if s/he thinks that this complaint effects the group and if you are also willing to discuss it with the class. We anticipate that any conflict should be able to be resolved at this stage; however in the unlikely event that it is not, we will arrange another discussion with you or you can try to resolve the issue by following stage two.

2)  Outline the details of your complaint by email and send it carol@greenlotusyoga.com who will investigate the complaint. The complaint will be reviewed and Green Lotus Yoga.. You will receive an email which will outline the main elements of your complaint and may ask you to address some issues in more detail. The details of the complaint may have to be teased out over more than one email. During this time, Green Lotus Yoga may suggest a phone call to speed matters up. The final response from Green Lotus will include the following information:

  • A decision about how the complaint will be addressed.
  • The reason for the decision
  • Any other action that may be taken in light of the complaint.
  • If it is not possible to provide a full answer to your complaint within 30 working days, the letter will outline reasons why and give a date by which a full answer is expected.

3) If you are not satisfied with the final response to your complaint then outline the reasons for your dissatisfaction by letter. Email this to Yoga Alliance UK (if the teachers are Yoga Alliance UK accredited).

YOGA ALLIANCE PROFESSIONALS CODE OF CONDUCT

This Code of Conduct is a summation and declaration of acceptable, ethical, and professional behavior by which all Yoga Alliance Professionals (aka yoga Alliance UK)  registered yoga teachers agree to conduct the teaching and business of Yoga. As a registrant of the Green Lotus Yoga Teacher Training, trainees should agree to uphold the ethical goals set forth in the following Code of Conduct, as outlined by Yoga Alliance Professionals:

  • To provide the public with safe and effective yoga classes.
  • To maintain and uphold the traditions of Hatha Yoga.
  • To conduct myself in a professional and conscientious manner.
  • To acknowledge the limitations of my skills and scope of practice and where appropriate refer students to seek alternative instruction, advice, treatment, or direction.
  • Create and maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for the practice of yoga.
  • Encourage diversity actively by respecting all students regardless of age, physical limitations, race, creed, gender, ethnicity, religion affiliation, or sexual orientation.
  • Respect the rights, dignity, and privacy of all students.
  • Avoid words and actions that constitute sexual harassment.
  • Follow all local government laws that pertain to my yoga teaching and business.

Students should agree to comply with the conditions and requirements as set out in the course curriculum, and accept that failure to do so will disqualify them from any accreditation. Furthermore they should vow to uphold the standards of the teachings they have been given, and to maintain and promote the good name of yoga at all times. They must accept that failure to do so may lead to the annulment of any accreditation obtained from the Green Lotus Yoga Teacher Training.

What do I get for the basic price?

The basic price is for Twin sharing in a Glamping tent – with lighting, electricity etc with nearby showers and compost toilets – they are very nice. We also have beds available in a 8 bed dorm, which has air-conditioning. There are also upgrades to other accommodation options. The price also includes three lovely meals per day and a copy of ‘The Art of Teaching Yoga Manual’.

Is there cloth washing facilities?

Yes there are washing machines and area’s to dry your cloths.

Can I use my debit or credit card?

Yes you can, use your card durning your stay and pay for things while at Suryalila, the bill can then be settled on your departure.

Are there any discounts for paying early?

No there is no discount for paying beforehand. The price is the same. Suryalila is one of the more expensive centres in Europe, because the standard is that little bit better than other centres, so the price is worked out on the lowest we can charge when the expenses are covered; this leaves us no room for an early bird price.

Are my flights included in the price?

No flights or transfers are included in the price

What books do I need to read before the training?

You will see a list of required books under ‘Reading List’

It is best to buy the books as soon as possible to start your reading before the TTC begins. It is not a pre-requisite to pre-read books before the TTC, but during the TTC, you will be learning a lot of new vocabulary, whether it is anatomy, alignment, sanskrit etc. so the sooner you get started the better. Our advice is to start with The Art of Teaching Yoga manual and the anatomy books.

What style of yoga will I be trained to teach?

On this training we put a lot of focus on preparing trainees for the classroom. The style of yoga trainees are trained to teach a Vinyasa. This means ‘breath synchronised movement’. There is also a strong anatomical and alignment focus to the work, so students can also adapt their teachers to teach alignment based hatha yoga. Some students like to change the name to Flow yoga or power yoga etc. These are also forms of Vinyasa.

Can I teach Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga after this training?

There is an Ashtanga influence on our trainings, but this is not an Ashtanga Vinyasa training and even though many of your students are also Ashtanga practitioners and go on to teach Ashtanga yoga, the certificate you receive upon graduation does not qualify you to teach Ashtanga Vinyasa. Many people confuse Vinyasa with Ashtanga Vinyasa. Ashtanga Vinyasa is a style of yoga that is a part of the Krishna Macharya lineage which originated in Mysore, India. Vinyasa is a more general term meaning “breath synchronised movement”. The style of asana on our trainings works with some Ashtanga poses and principles like Bandha, Ujjaji breath and creating internal heart to detox and open the body; student’s also study the original Ashtanga Yoga using Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, but the asana on these trainings does not limit itself to Ashtanga sequences and even though we salute Patanjali’s sutras and the spiritual aspects of Eastern thought, our Vinyasa style is more western in approach and teachers are encouraged to work intuitively and creatively when sequences their classes.

Will I have the opportunity to teach on the training course?

Yes you will. There are daily Teaching Methodology classes. You will start teaching one person one pose. Then graduate to teaching small groups of 3. Then finally you will teach the whole class. You will also have a teaching assessment before the end of the training, where you have to sequence your own 90 minute class. You will choose the tone of the class, whether you want it to be upbeat and strengthening, or mellow and relaxing. You can add music, poetry quotes etc; the main thing is to make it your own as much as possible around the specific guidelines you will be given. You will teach half the class on the day of your assessment to the group, but you won’t know which part of the class you will be teaching until just before you teach, so you have to prepare to teach the whole class. We do this to give the trainee the experience of creating, sequencing, pacing, instructing, adjusting and refining a class before they leave the course.

Is it ok to do teacher training just for self-development and to deepen my practice?

Yes it is. Lots of people have done this training as self development. Some have also started it for themselves and ended up teaching… However, even if you do not intend teaching, you will have to partake in the teaching exercizes. Even if you don’t teach yoga, these exercises will teach you so much; they force you to really know your stuff, to study that bit deeper and to learn how to project your voice in front of a group. One student, who was also lecturer in University, told us that the TTC helped her teaching in her college…

How is the course assessed?

There is 4 open book assessments for the Anatomy. We also do circles where we ask questions randomly about alignment, to make sure everyone completely understands these principles. Only one person out of over 250 has failed the course because they could not complete this section. It is not a very difficult section but it is a very important section and Green Lotus Yoga believes that even though Yoga is ultimately a spiritual practice, that teachers have to know the anatomy and alignment basics, so as not to hurt their students and to be able to guide them forward safely.

There is home tasks on Ayurveda and subtle anatomy.

Philosophy is not assessed, but there may be exercises for off time study.

You will also be assessed on teaching a class. So far everyone has passed this section.

The asana is assessed continually. There is a level of graduation that students work towards. If a student cannot attain the level of graduation and we have seen them work hard during the training and progress to the best of their ability, the student can still pass this section, if they understand exactly why they can’t do the pose and tell their trainer their practice plan in working to this pose. The trainer will also help them with this and explain to them which body parts they need to strengthen and release over a longer time period. The student much show that they understand this information and demonstrate that they are working in the correct direction. The graduation level you want to achieve is :

* A good standing practice* – Capacity to do a 2 hour practice* Ardha Padmasana – Half lotus forward bend* Navasana – Boat pose

* Urdhva Dhanurasana – wheel

* Sirsasana – Headstand with no wallPlease the morning asana classes also incorporate asanas that are more advanced than the graduation level. These asanas are taught is stages and students work to their own level.

Will I have study time on the TTC?

Yes you will. You will have time to study in the evenings and on your days off. Students often like to group study to make it more interesting and fun and have the support of your group. You will also be give “non-contact hours” to practice adjustments etc.

Will I have free time?

Yes, on an intensive there is 3 Saturdays off to rest and avail of local activities.

What type of students attend the trainings?

People who want to deepen and develop their practice and learn how to teach. On the international intensives the age group seems to be a little lower than on the longer Irish trainings- the average age is about 30. We get people form U.S, U.K and other European countries. We get a lot of students in their late twenties who seem to be very confident, adventurous, into travel, healthy living, vegan and vegetarian food and generally pretty cool 🙂 However this is not the only “type”. Some are less outgoing and/or are undergoing a deeper healing process. We also welcome older people; this can help ground the group and we welcome the maturity to keep the balance.
