Hello! My name is Carol Murphy. I started Green Lotus Yoga teacher training school in 2007. Since then I have graduated over 300 teachers from my training throughout Ireland and abroad. Most of my work is in Ireland, Spain and India but I have also taught yoga in London, California, South Africa and Morocco.
I like to teach Vinyasa style yoga as mindful, strengthening, slow, deep, breath-centered movement, creating various forms and threads to keep things alive. I am practising yoga 27 years and teaching 20. My background is in Iyengar, Ashtanga and Vinyasa, I am also a qualified Neuro-muscular therapist, which is a form of physical therapy that works with fascial meridians and acknowledges the interconnected nature of the body, just like yoga does…
In addition to the above, I have an Arts degree and a masters in Philosophy and Theatre. I have also studied Ayurveda and yoga therapy in India. I am a raw vegan educator (although not 100% vegan or raw), a qualified sports massage therapist, a trained Art of Being Tantra instructor, a qualified Trance Dance teacher and I practice and study the Reiki Tummo Method, which combines open heart meditations with reiki and kundalini healing work.
These gifts created solidity and ground from which I can rise and fly, roots and wings, creating safety, balance, expansion and joy in my life and for this I am grateful.
The Training Fee is €1700. The accommodation fee is also €1700.

Accommodation is for 25 nights and includes 3 gourmet vegetarian meals a day, free tea, coffee, fruit and drinking water. Full use of the facilities including pool, internet, yoga mat and props. A copy of ‘The Art of Teaching Manual’ and “Synergy, Integrated Yoga Anatomy for teachers and therapists”. and course notes are also included in the price.
‘Glamping’ Tent – 1,700 euro per person sharing – THESE ARE NOW BOOKED.
Camp in style ‘Glamping’ is short for glamorous camping. Glamp in a beautiful and spacious bell tent, each large enough to stand up in. The glamping tent offers 2 comfortable twin beds, a chest of drawers and hanging rail and fans. The tents overlook the stunning views of the foothills of the Sierra Grazalema. There are four compost toilets and one conventional toilet which are shared by the tents and three hot showers in the clamping area.
If you have concerns with ‘Glamping’ and the Spanish sun then let us reassure you. We have never found this to be an issue with students staying at Suryalila. You will be training during the day in the Shala, with its under floor cooling system and eating undercover, returning to your tents later in the day when the sun is going down.

The spacious dorm rooms have 8 beds per room with shared bathrooms. They are beautifully appointed and comfortable. The beautiful eight-person dorm is in Casa Saraswati.

Staying in a lovely, spacious yurt is a unique experience. There is a delightful twin & triple yurt fully furnished, with all of the comforts of our other rooms and a back-to-nature ambience. The yurt is located in our “glamping” area overlooking the ancient olive grove and has access to three hot showers, one toilet and 4 eco toilets right beside it. It has a wood burning fire stove for the colder months.

The newest addition to the accommodation is the Eco Casa’s. There is a choice of single or twin accommodation in these beautiful eco-friendly double room built from sustainable cob (straw bale & mud). It is charming with its romantic character.

This TTC takes places over 25 days. There are 3 Saturdays at the end of each week.
The Daily schedule is:
7.00-9.00 – Asana
9.00-10.00 – Breakfast
10.00-11.30- Theory Class (possibly anatomy, philosophy etc.)
11.40-1.00- Teaching Methodology (studying asana in great detail from the manual, teaching poses in groups, sequencing, adjustments etc.)
1.00-2.30 – Lunch
2.30-4.00- Theory (possibly anatomy, philosophy etc.)
4.10- 5.30- Second asana class, meditation or pranayama or Teaching Methodology.
The asana taught on this Teacher Training course is physically challenging, creative, alignment-orientated and fun.. In the classroom, Carol likes to play with a series of vinyasa threads (sequences of postures, link with the breath) that she has developed over the years. Carol also teaches technique classes where poses are broken down bio-mechanically and synergistically to bring the yoga anatomy off the page. She always allows for mixed level in her group by offering various expressions of the poses and encouraging students to work to their own level. Myofascial release workshops will also be taught to hydrate and release adhesions in this tensional connective tissue network. This work is also taught to release deep held tension in the body and can also improve mobility
There are daily Teaching Methodology classes, so that you will feel prepared for the classroom and feel fully equipped to deliver the work after you graduate. You will be taught a specific methodology with sequencing options and alignment principles that create structures to intelligently inform your classes, which also allow enough flexibility for you to develop your own individual teaching voice as an expression of your authentic self and your relationship with the practice.
The yoga anatomy taught on the 200 hr trainings is cutting edge. It incorporates principle of biomechanics, synergy and myofascial meridians. These classes allows you to dive into a deeper relationship with your body on and off the mat. They also equip you to understanding other people’s bodies in relation to postural holdings and common troubleshooting areas in relation to asana.
PRANIC HEALING ENERGY WORK AND MEDITATIONS
The philosophy on our trainings is delivered in a non-dogmatic way and invites group discussion where all beliefs and opinions are respected. We use class discussions, circles, artwork, chanting, empathetic listening and meditation processes to explore the spiritual systems of Patanjali’s sutras, Vedanta, Advaita Vedanta, Samkhya and Tantra. We believe that these spiritual systems all offer a different perspective of the same truth and we hope that in our explorations, students can find in these belief systems, tools to strengthen the mind, emotions and spirit, a spiritual rock to lean on in times of need, deeper insight to our true nature and a deeper sense of worth that lies inherent in our being. It is a true blessing to be able to explore this work within a group and many students have told us that that this part of the training has been life changing for them.

We also recommend the following anatomy books, which are great visual references, but are not on the ‘essential’ reading list, so we will not be using them directly in the classroom.
Suryalila Retreat Centre is an incredibly beautiful yoga centre close to Seville in Southern Spain.
It has 4 yoga spaces, one of which is a large Geodesic dome with an underfloor cooling system (please see from the pictures above). Most of the TTC will be in this dome.
The accommodation is that little bit more plush that the usual retreat standards, with washing machines, kitchens, lounge areas and aircon in the student houses. There is also outdoor yurt and glamping options. The food is to die for. The staff are so supportive and helpful. There is a great yoga shop there, where you can anything from raw chocolate and great Omnitom yoga clothing to tampons ! There is also horse riding, an outdoor pool area, great walks and their latest addition is a sweat lodge ! Students usually love Suryalila. On my last TTC intensive retreat there, 2 students commented that it was “one of the best weeks of their lives”.
Gourmet Vegetarian Cuisine
At Suryalila Retreat Centre, they have an outstanding vegetarian fare. Meals are delicious, diverse, and beautifully presented, using all organic and mostly local ingredients. They are working towards suppling more and more of produce needs from their own organic farm and garden!
The kitchen is a happy and bustling environment and the cooks are all very creative and talented. The Suryalila Kitchen specializes in gourmet international vegetarian cuisine, using the freshest seasonal, locally-sourced organic fruits and vegetables available, artfully prepared in a varied and truly eclectic international menu. Eggs are gathered daily from our own happy chickens and when the season allows you will enjoy the freshest of fruit picked from our own orchard of apricot, peach, fig and pear trees!
They regularly accommodate vegan, gluten-free, and non-dairy diets, so if you have any special dietary restrictions, just let us know!
The gourmet vegetarian cuisine will be one of the greatest food experiences of your life and we promise you, you will be raving about the food long after you return home!
The closest airport is Seville but it is also possible to fly into Malaga and get a bus or train to the retreat. Pickups can be arranged from Villamartin which is only a short ride to the centre.
We also organise group transfers from both airports at reasonable rates for a car holding up to 4 people. The cost of the transfer is shared between passengers.
Malaga is 2hrs from the centre the transfer cost is 150 euros one way.
Seville is 1hr from the retreat and transfers are 90 euros one way.

TTC GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE
We would like our students to know that if a student has a complaint on the TTC, we want to hear about it. ! We grow from feedback and we wish to support you, your journey and your training is any way we can. We believe that the guidelines for making complaints are outlined below will create a sense of safety in the group for both teachers and students, and help you complete the TTC successfully.
How to make a complaint
1) Speak to Carol Murphy or other trainer if appropriate and try to resolve the complaint informally on the day. Your trainer will then suggest that you either discuss the complaint at the nearest break, after class or possibly call a group circle about it if s/he thinks that this complaint effects the group and if you are also willing to discuss it with the class. We anticipate that any conflict should be able to be resolved at this stage; however in the unlikely event that it is not, we will arrange another discussion with you or you can try to resolve the issue by following stage two.
2) Outline the details of your complaint by email and send it email@example.com who will investigate the complaint. The complaint will be reviewed and Green Lotus Yoga.. You will receive an email which will outline the main elements of your complaint and may ask you to address some issues in more detail. The details of the complaint may have to be teased out over more than one email. During this time, Green Lotus Yoga may suggest a phone call to speed matters up. The final response from Green Lotus will include the following information:
3) If you are not satisfied with the final response to your complaint then outline the reasons for your dissatisfaction by letter. Email this to Yoga Alliance UK (if the teachers are Yoga Alliance UK accredited).
YOGA ALLIANCE PROFESSIONALS CODE OF CONDUCT
This Code of Conduct is a summation and declaration of acceptable, ethical, and professional behavior by which all Yoga Alliance Professionals (aka yoga Alliance UK) registered yoga teachers agree to conduct the teaching and business of Yoga. As a registrant of the Green Lotus Yoga Teacher Training, trainees should agree to uphold the ethical goals set forth in the following Code of Conduct, as outlined by Yoga Alliance Professionals:
Students should agree to comply with the conditions and requirements as set out in the course curriculum, and accept that failure to do so will disqualify them from any accreditation. Furthermore they should vow to uphold the standards of the teachings they have been given, and to maintain and promote the good name of yoga at all times. They must accept that failure to do so may lead to the annulment of any accreditation obtained from the Green Lotus Yoga Teacher Training.
Is there any pre-requisites to entering this training ?
We advise 2 years practice before embarking on a Yoga TTC. This is enough time to give students a firm foundation for the work involved on a TTC and also gives people a base to reach the level expected for graduation. Sometimes people achieve this foundation after a year or so of practice; there are always exceptions, but as a general, we recommend 2 years. What do I get for the basic price?
The basic price is for Twin sharing in a Glamping tent – with lighting, electricity etc with nearby showers and compost toilets – they are very nice. We also have beds available in a 8 bed dorm, which has air-conditioning. There are also upgrades to other accommodation options. The price also includes three lovely meals per day and a copy of ‘The Art of Teaching Yoga Manual’.
Is there cloth washing facilities?
Yes there are washing machines and area’s to dry your cloths.
Can I use my debit or credit card?
Yes you can, use your card durning your stay and pay for things while at Suryalila, the bill can then be settled on your departure.
Are there any discounts for paying early?
No there is no discount for paying beforehand. The price is the same. Suryalila is one of the more expensive centres in Europe, because the standard is that little bit better than other centres, so the price is worked out on the lowest we can charge when the expenses are covered; this leaves us no room for an early bird price.
Are my flights included in the price?
No flights or transfers are included in the price
What books do I need to read before the training?
You will see a list of required books under ‘Reading List’
It is best to buy the books as soon as possible to start your reading before the TTC begins. It is not a pre-requisite to pre-read books before the TTC, but during the TTC, you will be learning a lot of new vocabulary, whether it is anatomy, alignment, sanskrit etc. so the sooner you get started the better. Our advice is to start with The Art of Teaching Yoga manual and the anatomy books.
Is there Air Conditioning in the Yoga Shala (Centre)?
Most of the training is set in Geodesic Dome Yoga Shala which has the underfloor cooling system and there is also windows frames at the side of the dome with mosquito netting to allow for ventilation. It is quite idyllic.
What will the weather be like ?
The average temperature in is 26 degrees to 31 degrees, with 12hrs of sunshine and very little rainfall.
There are direct flights from most central airports into Seville or Malaga with a number of Airlines, Seville is the closest airport to the retreat centre. If possible aim for a morning flight to allow time for you to travel to the centre.
What is the journey time and cost of transfers from Malaga?
It takes approximately 2.5 hours from Malaga. A transfer from Malaga is 150 euro. We will try to organise that you share a transfer with other students with similar flight times where possible.
Is there a bus from Malaga to the centre?
You can get the public bus to our local town Villamartin and we can pick you up from there for 10€. The bus costs around 15€. The bus you get is Los Amarillos – you can check times here but they don’t have them up to date more than a couple of weeks in advance. You can get an idea though of what normally runs on a Friday.
What is the journey time and cost of transfers from Seville?
It takes approximately 1 hour from Seville. A transfer from Seville is 90 euro. We will try and organise that you share a transfer with other students with similar flight times where possible.
When can we arrive and leave the centre?
You can arrive a day that the training starts which is normally around early evening and leave the day after it finishes after breakfast. There is an option to stay extra nights at the retreat at additional cost.
What is the start time and end time of the training?
The training will start at 4-5pm on the day of arrival and then 7am the following day, it will finish after practice on the last day and breakfast at 10am.
Do we need a visa?
Not normally if you are travelling from a European destination, however if you coming from outside of Europe it is best to check with the airline that you book your flight with.
Do I need vaccinations?
There are no recommended vaccinations for Spain
Do I need mosquito repellent?
It is always advisable to take a mosquito spray or lotion if you are susceptible to bites, there is window netting in the indoor rooms. Nets are available if required.
How many people share the toilet and showers for the dorm accommodation?
The larger dorm of 8 has two showers, and two toilets for its own use.
What other amenities are available?
There is a wonderful pool to relax by. Massages are available, a yoga shop, a sweat lodge, horse riding and lots more.
Is there Internet?
Yes there is free internet in all the hang out spaces and is generally available through the centre but can’t be guaranteed in all areas.
How many students are in the group ?
Numbers are capped to 25 students. If we take over 15, there will be a second teacher assisting.
Is this training course registered or is this course qualified me to be a teacher?
This training is registered with Yoga Professionals (aka Yoga Alliance UK) and Yoga Alliance USA – graduates of this program can therefore register with either body at a 200 hrs level. If at some point you wanted to continue your studies, you will be able to do it with an American or European training school. Yoga Alliance U.S and U.K are the most recognised Yoga registration body world wide. This certification will qualify you to teach Yoga anywhere in the world.
What is the cost of membership and insurance with Yoga Alliance Professional (U.K)?
What style of yoga will I be trained to teach?
On this training we put a lot of focus on preparing trainees for the classroom. The style of yoga trainees are trained to teach a Vinyasa. This means ‘breath synchronised movement’. There is also a strong anatomical and alignment focus to the work, so students can also adapt their teachers to teach alignment based hatha yoga. Some students like to change the name to Flow yoga or power yoga etc. These are also forms of Vinyasa.
Can I teach Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga after this training?
There is an Ashtanga influence on our trainings, but this is not an Ashtanga Vinyasa training and even though many of your students are also Ashtanga practitioners and go on to teach Ashtanga yoga, the certificate you receive upon graduation does not qualify you to teach Ashtanga Vinyasa. Many people confuse Vinyasa with Ashtanga Vinyasa. Ashtanga Vinyasa is a style of yoga that is a part of the Krishna Macharya lineage which originated in Mysore, India. Vinyasa is a more general term meaning “breath synchronised movement”. The style of asana on our trainings works with some Ashtanga poses and principles like Bandha, Ujjaji breath and creating internal heart to detox and open the body; student’s also study the original Ashtanga Yoga using Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, but the asana on these trainings does not limit itself to Ashtanga sequences and even though we salute Patanjali’s sutras and the spiritual aspects of Eastern thought, our Vinyasa style is more western in approach and teachers are encouraged to work intuitively and creatively when sequences their classes.
Will I have the opportunity to teach on the training course?
Yes you will. There are daily Teaching Methodology classes. You will start teaching one person one pose. Then graduate to teaching small groups of 3. Then finally you will teach the whole class. You will also have a teaching assessment before the end of the training, where you have to sequence your own 90 minute class. You will choose the tone of the class, whether you want it to be upbeat and strengthening, or mellow and relaxing. You can add music, poetry quotes etc; the main thing is to make it your own as much as possible around the specific guidelines you will be given. You will teach half the class on the day of your assessment to the group, but you won’t know which part of the class you will be teaching until just before you teach, so you have to prepare to teach the whole class. We do this to give the trainee the experience of creating, sequencing, pacing, instructing, adjusting and refining a class before they leave the course.
Is it ok to do teacher training just for self-development and to deepen my practice?
Yes it is. Lots of people have done this training as self development. Some have also started it for themselves and ended up teaching… However, even if you do not intend teaching, you will have to partake in the teaching exercizes. Even if you don’t teach yoga, these exercises will teach you so much; they force you to really know your stuff, to study that bit deeper and to learn how to project your voice in front of a group. One student, who was also lecturer in University, told us that the TTC helped her teaching in her college…
How is the course assessed?
Will I have study time on the TTC?
Yes you will. You will have time to study in the evenings and on your days off. Students often like to group study to make it more interesting and fun and have the support of your group. You will also be give “non-contact hours” to practice adjustments etc.
Will I have free time?
Yes, on an intensive there is 3 Saturdays off to rest and avail of local activities.
What type of students attend the trainings?
People who want to deepen and develop their practice and/or learn how to teach. We get a lot of students who seem to be very confident, adventurous, into travel, healthy living, vegan and vegetarian eaters (although meat eaters are also welcome ! ) and generally pretty cool, if we don’t say so ourselves :-). Many are also undergoing a deep healing process and want to move beyond self limiting beliefs and feel safer, clearer, more confident and happier on the inside. One thing we all have in common ; we love yoga !
Do I need to bring my own yoga mat?
A lot of students like to bring their own, but there are mats supplied.
Do I need medical travel insurance?
We advise travel insurance.
Is there a ATM at the airport our facilities for me to change money?
Yes there will be ATM’s at the airport and in the shop they take Visa & Debit Cards & Euro’s.
What should I bring with me?
